Kyoto, Part 2

Yamazaki-ya Ryokan

We stayed at Yamazaki-Ya for our last two nights in Kyoto. It was a beautiful Ryokan tucked away in the hills of northwestern Kyoto. We were surrounded by traditional Japanese gardens and a stream right outside our window.

Ryoan-ji Temple

Ryoan-ji is most famous for its zen garden. It is only meant to be viewed by those sitting on the garden’s veranda. There are 15 stones in the garden, strategically positioned in a way so that you are only able to see 14 at a time. It is said that once you reach enlightenment, you will see all 15.

Kinkaku-ji Temple

Kinkaku-ji Temple (the Golden Pavilion) was one of the most impressive historical structures we have seen in Japan. The temple is literally covered in gold!

Ginkaku-ji Temple

Ginkaku-ji Temple (the Silver Pavilion) was not covered in silver….. but, it was surrounded by a serene mountainside garden which gave us a beautiful view of the city.

Dinner on the Road

We loved exploring through the grocery stores in Kyoto. They were full of delicious pre-made foods like sushi, tempura, different kinds of bento, and our favorite- salmon musubi.

These are my favorites of the pictures that you have posted thus far. I love the Lotus Pond and Kinkaku-Ji especially. There is also this good looking couple that keeps appearing in your pictures! Can’t wait to see pics from Nara.
